To Parents, Guardians and Students:

Welcome to school year 2020-2021; the year of virtual learning! I am pleased to welcome you to the 2020-2021 school year. While our time together this past year was certainly quite different with remote learning, I am pleased that our close relationships with staff, students, and families continued to grow during this time.  I appreciate everyone’s communication, patience, and positive attitudes.

Though this school year is projected to be different from any other, together, we will continue our vision of providing a college and career focused education to our students and quality service and support to our families. I am truly honored to continue leading the Sudbrook community for the 2020-2021 school year.  We have accomplished so much as a school community, and we will continue to do so. This new learning model does not need to be a barrier, but instead will serve as an opportunity to change our mindset as it relates to the delivery of instruction and engaging students in learning. This year, I am very much looking forward to providing exceptional educational experiences for our students. I want students to leave Sudbrook Magnet Middle School with memories that will hopefully last a lifetime! We want our students to love learning and love coming to school, even if it is virtually. With your help, we can instill life-long values in our students to work hard, exceed expectations, and to appreciate their education. Though we are forced to adapt our teaching and learning methods to address the conditions of the pandemic, our heart for our students and families remains the same, and we will do everything in our power to keep our students thriving. "Relentless in our Pursuit of Excellence in Academics, Character, and Leadership!” With your support, we can build on our past successes to take Sudbrook Magnet Middle School to the next level.


Where do I go to find pertinent information about this school year?

We hope you find our website and BCPS’ helpful and informative. We also send out daily communication to our students and parents via Schoology and School Messenger.

Virtual Open House is Thursday, August 13, 2020 from 5:30-6:30 . The LINK to access our Virtual Open House can be found on our school’s website on August 13th. Information related to the process and procedures for teaching and learning online will be discussed. During breakout sessions, parents and students will have an opportunity to meet their teachers in a virtual classroom just as you would in a physical open house held on campus.

How will school lessons be delivered?

Our teachers and students will use “Schoology” as the online Learning Management System (LMS). Through Google Meet and Schoology students will receive instruction, complete and post assignments, participate in live lesson delivery and communicate with their teachers. The delivery model may be different, but the quality of education will be same, if not better. In an online format, students will have an opportunity to go back and re-watch recorded lessons. Using “It’s Learning” allows teachers to post multiple resources and links for lessons to ensure students have access to the most up to date information.

Instruction and Grading:

Virtual instruction will: (1) contain strengthened alignment to MD College and Career Ready Standards; (2) include diagnostic curriculum tasks to determine unfinished student learning; (3) provide live instruction with teachers on the designated school days for every course; (4) include up to 3.5 hours of daily synchronous (live) teaching; and (5) include up to 3 hours of daily independent, asynchronous (anytime) learning, which may include additional small group instruction on a rotation.

Teachers will adhere to traditional grading and reporting procedures as outlined in the BCPS Grading and Reporting Procedures Manual.



BCPS teachers will take attendance using the BCPS Student Information System (SIS).  BCPS has outlined the following attendance procedures during virtual instruction that are in alignment with MSDE’s COVID-19 Guidance Requirements.  In these procedures, attendance is defined as presence and will be recorded for official reporting purposes and for the identification of additional student supports.  Middle and high school teachers will continue to take period attendance at the secondary level, and which will be recorded in the SIS.

·      Student logs in to Google Meet for their first meeting period.

·      In the first meeting period of each day, the first meeting period teacher will take roll call.

·      In the first meeting period of each day, the first meeting period teacher will go into the SIS by the end of their duty day and mark official attendance for that day.

·      All other meeting period teachers record period attendance in SIS.


Social-Emotional Learning:

In addition to our enhanced instructional approach, BCPS/Sudbrook Magnet Middle School will emphasize social-emotional learning (SEL) and community-building for students, staff, and families.  Every effort will be made to reconnect, heal, and build as staff and students convene in virtual spaces.

·      Promote healing and build community (in light of COVID-19, race and racism issues) and use universal strategies to identify student concerns and needs.

·      Provide a system of supports and interventions for student social emotional well-being, mental health, and overall wellness.

·      Continue student and family outreach and support.

·      Offer professional learning for related services providers to address student social-emotional well-being.

·      Expand the Culture of Care initiative and Mind Over Matters campaign.



Sudbrook Magnet Middle School will utilize Wednesdays as a day to provide additional instructional support. Students will use this time to attend tutorials, make up assessments and receive additional support to ensure mastery of academic standards is achieved. Please work with our teachers to ensure students understand Wednesdays are not off days.



Students must complete all assignments when given and must meet standards on assessments to successfully pass a class. Grades are not given. Grades are earned based on the student’s ability to meet standards in a subject. It’s extremely important that parents monitor their children’s progress and ask questions if you are not sure of the grades. BCPSOne and Schoology website is an essential tool to monitor your student’s progress. BCPSOne/Schoology for Parents allows you to instantly see your child’s attendance record and grades as the teacher enters it.

Students will be required to login and attend class on a daily basis. During class time, teachers will provide live instruction, allow students a chance to practice concepts, work in groups and assess students’ learning. Though all classes and live instruction will be recorded, to get the most out of virtual learning, you must attend every class every day. The recorded lessons and related links are for reinforcement when students need to hear and see an explanation a second time.

Proper online etiquette:

·      Students must be appropriately dressed

·      Students must maintain a quiet workplace without distractions

·      Students must mute their device unless speaking

·      Students must use the chat features for school related business only

·      Students must complete assignments by the deadlines provided

·      Students must follow all classroom rules as explained by the teacher

Failure to abide by the school’s expectation for proper online etiquette as well as teacher’s classroom rules may result in disciplinary action.

Finally, Sudbrook Magnet Middle School’s faculty and staff are committed to providing a quality education through our Online format. To guarantee your student’s academic success, students must be committed to attending class every day, complete all assignments in a timely manner and have the academic discipline of staying on task and focused. With everyone working together our students will continue to embody our school motto: "Relentless in our Pursuit of Excellence in Academics, Character, and Leadership."
